From the President

A prospective student from Philadelphia recently emailed me as to why he had made the decision to apply to CBUS. He felt, “CBUS is the only university/seminary committed to biblical apologetics, and the only one that reflects Reformed, presuppositional epistemology.” I, like John Frame and many others, have been very distressed with today’s universities that used to hold to Reformed and presuppositional apologetics. In fact, I recently visited Westminster Seminary in Escondido, California and when I went into the bookstore, I found the works of J. P. Moreland, William Lane Craig, and other Natural Theologians stacked up almost as high as the front desk. The bookstore manager explained that they were the new, hot books that the students were buying. Knowing how much these authors hate Van Til and detest the Reformed faith, my heart sank within me to see their works promoted within Westminster Seminary. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

CBUS, by the grace of God, will not compromise or sell out to rationalists, empiricists, mystics, or fideists. We will not retreat from our position that the Christian world and life view must come from a sound, grammatical exegesis of the original texts of Scripture. I am not aware of any university or seminary today that bases its beliefs on careful exegesis. This is why your prayers and support for CBUS are so important. Upon our shoulders has fallen the mantle of Cornelius Van Til, Gordon Clark, Carl F. Henry, and Francis Schaeffer. If you are tired of the rationalism and Arminianism taught by Geisler and his rat-pack, then its time to get involved in CBUS.

“So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun; when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.” (Isaiah 59:19)

CBUS Releases the Apologetics AP 301 Course for Audit

Possessing an ability to think Biblically in all areas of life is crucial for Christians living in this vastly complex world of ours.  Those who lack this ability often live fragmented and compartmentalized lives, putting the mask (where we get our “hypocrisy”) of religion on in some places (e.g. church) and the mask of “the world” on in others (e.g. work, outings, entertainment, etc.).

Furthermore, as our culture continues down the path of secularization which leads back to ancient Greece and Rome, Christianity is more and more under assault.  As Francis Schaeffer and Dr. Morey observe, we have moved from a Christian culture to a post-Christian culture, and now to the rapidly rising anti-Christian culture.  In addition, as the world, especially America, continues toward religious and multicultural pluralism (not to mention moral relativism) and technological advances that raise bio-ethical issues, challenges strike from every area of life.  The need for Christians to not only defend themselves and respond to such attacks, but also know how to cast “down every argument and high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God” (2 Cor. 10:5) is a matter of life or death, eternally.  It is not simply enough to believe what we believe, but we are forced by those around us to know why we believe what we believe.  Too often Christians are taught only what to believe and not why to believe in it.  Why do we believe in God?  Why do we believe in the Bible?  Why do we believe in Christ?  The need for an apologetic that is both biblical and effective is clearly justified.

CBUS has prepared a comprehensive course designed as an introduction and in-depth study of the nature and use of apologetics in the Christian life. Special emphasis is given to the various approaches and methods of Evangelical apologetics.  The course contains a 92 page syllabus complete with required reading listed, audio lecture files and thorough lecture notes all on one CD.  After completing this course, student should obtain the following:

  • A good understanding of the various apologetic approaches and systems.
  • An ability to think and reason in a distinctly Christian manner, rather than simply memorizing the right answers.
  • An ability to detect and destroy unbiblical presuppositions.

University Book Review

Introduction to Defending the Faith by Dr. Robert A. Morey

What do you say when someone argues that God does not exist, or that science has disproved Jesus’ resurrection, or that the Bible is filled with errors? How can the average Christian answer objections like these?

Noting that all Christians are called upon to defend the faith, Dr. Robert Morey makes clear the principles and attitudes basic to that task as they are expressed in a biblical world-and-life view. Designed to cut to the heart of non-Christian thinking, this book includes a handy chart showing Christian replies to many common intellectual challenges.
